Kent rider Monica Ballard scooped two Derby titles and was runner-up in a third on board her consistent mare, My Amazing Grace, at the recent Wales & West End of Season Derby Show (26 – 28 September).
The pair opened their account with a fine second place behind Surrey’s Sam Holmes in the Senior 90cms Derby on the second day of the show; they then topped the leader board in both the following day’s equivalent and Saturday’s Gwalia Packaging Group Senior 1.00m.
Having beaten Monica in the first of the Senior 90cms Derbies, Sam and his mount Sea Breeze had to settle for third place in Sunday’s class.
Tamara Vernon, also from Surrey, headed the first of the Gwalia Packaging Group-sponsored Senior 1.10m Derbies on board her own Graf Truly; the second 1.10m Derby went to Devon’s James McLachlan riding Zoe Bagwell’s Never No Doubts. Completing the Senior Derby line-up of victors was Anya Brown from Madley Heath in Staffordshire who took the final day’s 1.00m class on Assandra, owned by Gemma Ross.
Three Pony Derbies were contested; the first of these, Saturday’s 90cms class went to Oliver (Ollie) Fletcher from Faringdon in Oxfordshire. Riding his father Graham’s Sweet Delight, Ollie finished a full second ahead of runner-up Georgia Damps (Essex). In third place was Faye Sutton (Shropshire) on board Jacqueline Sutton’s Silver Moon II and the following day Faye went two better when heading the same height Derby riding Jayne Warde-Aldam’s Bob Bob.
Amanda Clark from Somerset scored a one-two in Saturday’s Pony 1.0m Derby, winning on Rebecca Clark’s Picadero in a time of 37.25 and taking second with Pablo IX, also owned by Rebecca, stopping the clock on 38.03.
